Plant Key & Heat Zone Map
This key is designed to help you in selecting your plants. With each order you will receive more detailed growing instructions including soil preparation, planting, watering and fertilizing.
Most people realize that different plants like different amounts of sunlight and know to look for the sun symbols for each plant. Many people are also familiar with a perennial plant hardiness map, which divides our country into 11 zones, each of which represents an area’s average minimum temperature or how cold an area gets. That type of map is used to
determine if a plant can be over wintered in that zone.
The effect of how hot an area is or the maximum temperatures is just as important a role in plant success as how cold an area is. The amount of heat a plant receives is different than the amount of sun a plant receives. To that end, the American Horticultural Society has recently developed a map that divides the country into 12 heat zones. By finding your
region on the map and referencing our plant heat tolerance classifications, a series of three thermometers representing cool, warm and hot areas, you can be sure to select plants that are appropriate for the heat in your area.
The plants we offer are grown throughout the United States and are very adaptable to a variety of growing conditions. Please note that even gardeners in cooler regions can have very hot spots in their yards, such as next to brick walls, driveways and on some decks. Plants that prefer cool temperatures will benefit from shade from the hot afternoon sun in
these hot locations, especially plants grown in containers since the roots cannot grow into the cool ground.
